PRESS RELEASE
Skegness Celebrates If you do like to be beside the seaside, Skegness is the place on Saturday 29th July when the Town plays host to Sean Tully. The Coronation Street Barman has the honour of switching on the Skegness Illuminations as part of a day of festivities including the 125th Anniversary of Skegness Pier.
Survival over the last 125 years has been no mean achievement for the Pier. Like many Victorian Piers that have not withstood to the present day, Skegness has had its share of storms and fire that have destroyed much of the seaward decking. The land based structure however survives to house one of the Country’s biggest amusement centres and retains a portion of the traditional decked walkway. Recently refurbished the Pier Head extends across the sands giving fantastic views out to sea.
Visitors to Skegness on July 29th will be treated to a fly past of the Pier by a Spitfire from the awe-inspiring RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and staged rescue from the Pier Head by the Town’s lifeboat team as part of National Lifeboat Day. The Pier will also play host to a special performance of Punch and Judy and preview of the fabulous summer spectacular ‘Million Dollar Movies and Musicals’.
A Beach Sports Tournament including Five-a-Side Football and Tag Rugby takes place throughout the day to the left of the Pier, with opportunities for spectators to test their skills. Entertainment continues throughout the evening at the open air Clocktower Island Stage including a Grand Parade and guest appearance by Sean Tully culminating in the Switch-On and a spectacular firework display over the beach.

PRESS RELEASE
Spitfire Salutes Pier as Skegness Celebrates
Skegness will be treated to the awe-inspiring sight of a Spitfire from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as it flies past to commemorate the Pier’s 125th Anniversary on Saturday 29th July. Later that day Coronations Street’s favourite barman Sean Tully, played by Antony Cotton, will Switch-On the Illuminations in a massive day of celebrations in the Town including Skegness Pier’s 125th Anniversary, National Lifeboat Day, Beach Sports Festival, Illumination Parade, Switch-On and firework display.
Organised by East Lindsey District Council, the Beach Sports Festival kicks off with Five-a-Side Football at 10am just to the left of the Pier. Tag Rugby, in Association with Skegness RFU, starts at mid-day and Beach Cricket and Powerkiting take place on Sunday 30th July.
The Pier Head will provide the best vantage point for the fly past at 2.05pm. Immediately following the fly past will be the official opening of the refurbished Pier Head. Visitors will then be able to join Beve’s Pier Dancers in cheering for their favourite character as Dino, the Pier’s Pet Dinosaur, races with friends in the Skegness Scuttle followed by a special Pier showing of Punch and Judy. Anyone who enjoys a challenge will also be able to enter the Pier Prize Draw Quiz with a chance to the £125 prize.
As a seaside town Skegness owes much to its Lifeboat Crews who will be fundraising on July 29th for National Lifeboat Day. At 3pm a sea rescue will be staged from the Pier Head. Watch out for the mystery guest who has dangerously drifted out to sea in an inflatable!
Immediately after the lifeboat rescue Janice Sutton’s School of Dance will be joining the celebrations on the Pier Head by treating visitors to a preview of their fabulous summer spectacular ‘Million Dollar Movies and Musicals’, currently running at the Embassy Theatre. When the dancing concludes the lucky winner of the £125 Jackpot will be announced and a presentation made to the finalists of the Beach Rugby Tournament.
This years’ Illumination Switch-On is set to be the biggest ever in Skegness. Entertainment begins on the Clock Tower Island Stage with Beve’s Pier Dancers at 7.30pm. The Switch-On Parade is at 9.00pm culminating at the Clock Tower Island for star appearances including Lincs FM’s Eddie Shaw and ofcouse Sean Tully. The whole celebration culminates in a magnificent firework display over the beach.
